Pineville, N.C. - The USCAA #6 Johnson & Wales men's soccer team capped an undefeated regular season on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over defending NCCAA Division 2 national champions Bob Jones University at the OrthoCarolina Sportsplex.
"As a coaching staff, we're incredibly proud of the guys," said head coach James Drzewiecki. "To do something so rare as finish undefeated is really incredible, and to finish it against a team as talented and as well coached as Bob Jones makes it even more special. Now it's up to us to carry the momentum into the postseason."
The Wildcats controlled the play throughout the first half, outshooting Bob Jones 10-3, but were made to wait until the 50th minute for a breakthrough. The opening goal would come in transition, as Jackson slipped Villanueva in on goal before the sophomore fired home with his left foot to make it 1-0.
Jackson added the insurance goal in the 87th minute, running on to a long ball from Sam Fanning before heading the ball over goalkeeper Isaac Landry for his USCAA-leading 29th goal of the campaign.
Johnson & Wales held a 16-7 advantage in shots on the afternoon, with Jackson and Villanueva finishing with four shots each.
Goalkeeper John Lowes was called on to make three saves on the day, picking up his ninth win of the season.
Johnson & Wales will now shift its attention to the USCAA National Championships, as the team awaits a bid to the tournament. Play is scheduled to begin on Nov. 9 in Virginia Beach, Va.
